HOW UNIVERSITY BAPTIST OUTREACH BEGAN
In October of 2015 Mike was invited to go with a group from a church in Columbia, SC to evangelize on the outskirts of the University of South Carolina Columbia campus. That evening while the pastor of the church and several men from the church preached on the street corner, Mike started walking down the street. There he saw, bar after bar and large groups of college students simply hanging out in or around them. With gospel tracts in hand, he began to give them to the people on the street and talk to those that would take a minute to talk to him. A few weeks later he went back to the university during class time and gave gospel tracts to the students he met as he walked around the campus. Later he found that there was a place on campus called “free speech zone”. Many students were gathered in this location and he gave out over 1,000 tracts the day he was on campus. Since that time he has been to major universities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland and has given hundreds of thousands of gospel tracts to students on campus.
Mike began to meet Christian students. As they talked, he realized that there was not only a need to evangelize the lost, but that Christian students need encouragement. His heart became burdened about this need. Students may start organizations on campus for whatever purpose they wish to meet. Mike is now in the process of contacting Christian students at the universities he goes to and together they are making arrangements for starting University Baptist Outreach Bible classes. There is no way that Mike can teach classes at all the universities he goes to, so he is enlisting laypeople from Baptist churches near these universities to teach. One vital area that many Christian students need to be encouraged in, is their need to be faithful to a local church near their campus. For this reason, Mike works closley with Independent Baptist Churches near university and college campus to help them start and maintain an active campus ministry as part of their church outreach.
